Lens Depth of Field - Focal Length

Most of you read in books or heard in school:
Long Lens (Narrow Angle)  - Shallow Depth of Field
Short Lens (Wide Angle) - Greater Depth of Field
Examples below illustrate this. But lets analyse it for a second. What do we actually see ? Are we comparing apples to oranges? We are talking about two different shots altogether.
When you bring Wide Lens closer to accommodate for similar composition, notice what happens... the same shallow Depth of Field as with the Long Lens! The field of view changes but the Depth of Field is as shallow as on the Long Lens.

In many situations , bringing Wide Lens close can be a "danerous" proposition. In particular this holds truth in reference to human face as Wide Lenses invariably introduce the element of Distortion.
