Mood Lighting creation is a fundamental aspect of Cinematic Expression. Important elements to observe are the Key Light and the Ambiance. Contrary to popular belief traditional Three Point Lighting does not have much to do with Mood as it only serves the purpose of describing dimentionality of the subject. Three most important Lighting elemnts in Mood creation are Ambiance, Key and Lighting Style. Position of the Key Light and Lighting Setup (Narrow/Broad) determine the Lighting Style.
Key Light Alone
Key + Fill Light
Key + Fill + Ambiance
Key + Fill + Ambiance + Edge Light + Background Light
Turning off the Fill Light and Lowering Ambiance Creates Low Key Mood.
Sometimes it helps to accentuate the Edge Light.
Usually Low Key Style presents most interesting effect with Key Light playing narrowly... In this example Key is in Broad Position.
Special Effect Lghing.
Backlight with low level Ambiance
Special Effect Lighting - Low Key - Candle Light.
Elements to observe are:
Ambiance, Key Light Position (Narrow), Quality/Direction/Color of Key Light
